St. Cloud Diocese blessed with tradition of hospitality known as Las Posadas

by Sue Schulzetenberg
Visitor Staff Writer

COLD SPRING — A procession of people, carrying candles, knock on doors and sing to the people inside. The song lyrics implore for entry into into the home, as the group reenacts Mary and Joseph’s searching for shelter during their Christmas Eve journey through Bethlehem.

This reenactment, known as Las Posadas, is taking place up to Dec. 24 in several communities across the St. Cloud Diocese. Usually the reenactment is repeated for nine days, Dec. 16-24. Literally meaning “shelter,” Las Posadas ultimately focuses on hospitality — welcoming people into one’s home.

“It’s a tradition from long ago,” said Antonia Gomez, a member of St. Mary Parish in Melrose.

Book tells miraculous story of goodwill during Christmas Truce of 1914

by Carol Jessen-Klixbull

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Four months into World War I, as the Allied forces of Belgium, France and Britain were locked in a stalemate with the Germans, each side hoping to wait the other side out, a remarkable occurrence took place.
Troops on either side were sheltered in narrow ditches, separated only by a barren stretch of ground called “No Man’s Land,” which in some places was no more than 30 yards wide. As many as 100,000 troops may have participated in what can be called a miracle, born of love for humankind — the Christmas Truce of 1914.

Songwriter and folksinger, John McCutcheon, tells the touching story of soldiers on both sides laying down their weapons to share one special night of camaraderie with each other in a new book titled “Christmas in the Trenches.” The characters are fictional but the story about this brief, yet grand moment in time, is historically accurate.

Boy Scouts serve Christmas joy with holiday dinner

by Sophie Schottler
Visitor Staff Writer

WAITE PARK — People often think of traditions as being established from the top down by cultures, religions or some other great, amorphous source.

But traditions don’t have to be established by some such mighty “definer of rituals.” Joe Cordie is living proof that an individual community, if not one individual alone, can create a beloved annual tradition “from the bottom up.”

Cordie’s tradition is the 21st Annual Christmas Dinner hosted by Waite Park Boy Scout Troop 20. Served on Christmas Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Joseph Parish in Waite Park, the menu is a typical home-cooked holiday meal of turkey, dressing and all the trimmings.

But the menu becomes almost insignificant when Cordie speaks of the spirit behind the dinner.

“The goal is to make available to the community a place to come together with no price,” he said. Anybody who might be alone for Christmas or can’t afford a big meal is welcome, he added.
