Peace
by Lexi Marthaler,

Peace.
Not just an absence
Of war,
Of hate,
Of tension,
Of injustice
And conflict
Peace.
A relationship characterized
By respect,
By harmony,
By justice,
By agreement,
By goodwill,
And love.
Peace.
Something we all
have to work towards.
Deborah Schnettler, religion teacher at SS. Peter, Paul and Michael Middle School in St. Cloud, accepts the first annual “Peacemaker Award” from CHS/John XXIII principal Lynn Grewing during a Feb. 9 Peace Week Awards Program in the North Gymnasium.
The student body gives Schnettler, who was visibly moved, a standing ovation.

SJ Prep students connect with Mexico Benedictines via music

COLLEGEVILLE — Is music truly the universal language? Yes, judging from a recent tour taken by 29 choir and orchestra students from St. John’s Preparatory School in Collegeville, who connected and communicated with students and others in Mexico City, Mexico.
The Chamber Choir and Chamber Orchestra performed songs such as “Ave Maria” and “Ave Verum Corpus” at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Centro Escolar del Lago. Their audience consisted of students at the abbey’s school, members of their host families and others associated with the abbey. The tour lasted from Jan. 27 through Feb. 4, which corresponded with the prep school’s winter Interim week.

“That was one of our best performances; the audience was excited and easy to perform for,” said 10th-grader Meghan Murphy.
While Mexico City and Collegeville may be cut from different cultural and climatic cloths, the students and their adult chaperones found that the thread of Benedictine values and hospitality was woven through each — both Abadia del Tepeyac in Mexico and St. John’s Abbey in Minnesota.
“It’s not just a Minnesota thing; it’s all across the world,” 12th-grader John Dwyer said.
How did the monks at the south-of-the-border Benedictine monastery compare to those in Collegeville?
“The hospitality was similar, the attire was close,” Dwyer said.
Parishioners in St. Cloud Diocese prepare for Lent, plan to pray more

ST. CLOUD DIOCESE — “From dust you are to dust you shall return,” will be repeated throughout the St. Cloud Diocese as Catholics here and throughout the world receive a cross of ashes on their foreheads on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 21.
The date marks the beginning of Lent, the 40 days (not including Sundays) before Easter. Lent is described as having a penitential character and as being “a time for reflecting on the baptismal commitment we make as Christians,” according to “Catholic Traditions: Treasures New and Old,” a book by Joanne Turpin.

Traditional Lenten requirements call for Catholics age 14 and older (unless reasons of health excuse them) to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent. Fasting is required on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, meaning Catholics between age 18 and 59 (unless excused for reasons of health or other serious reasons) limit themselves to one full meal and two lighter meals sufficient to maintain their strength.
Today, besides denying themselves through fasting or abstinence, Catholics try also to do something special in honor of the liturgical season of Lent, such as performing charitable acts or works of corporal mercy.

You have to hand it to the three-dimensional art class which created this sculpture depicting hands flashing signs of peace in ramifying fashion, like some “tree of peace.” |
