Melrose ‘tweens’ take step up toward better health

Bright yellow pedometers track steps, increase kids’ motivation

by Sue Schulzetenberg
Visitor Staff Writer

MELROSE — Students at St. Mary School in Melrose are taking steps toward better health — literally.

Since mid-January, pre-teen or “tween-age” students have been taking the longer, more “scenic” routes to the library and lavatories, and to deliver messages between school staff members. What is motivating them to take these steps, these many, many steps?

Well, in the longer run — or perhaps, longer walk — it’s the prospect of improved fitness and health. But in the shorter run, the motivation is the bright yellow pedometers that they wear all their waking hours as constant companions and constant reminders that every step they take is being counted.
Indeed, the bi-pedded participants are free to keep wearing their pedometers even while they sleep if they wish, but they are responsible for the care of the pedometers. In other words, they are encouraged to wear their pedometers, but not to wear them out.

The third-through-sixth-graders plus all of the faculty and some parents and other family members are participating in the project. They record daily, from daybreak to nightfall, how many steps they’ve taken. They will do so for the next 90 days, striving — and striding — to meet the challenge of gradually increasing their step-count.

Travis Hoppe and Abby Wessel of St. Mary School in Melrose show the pedometers they wear daily to count their steps. Third-through-sixth-graders are wearing the step-recorders as a incentive to become more fit and healthy. (SCV photo by Sue Schulzetenberg)

DCCW book flows from Vatican II prose

by Sue Schulzetenberg
Visitor Staff Writer
ST. CLOUD DIOCESE — Documents that changed changed the way Mass is celebrated have been summarized and condensed for the average adult, thanks to the St. Cloud Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (DCCW).

The summaries and reflections, written mainly by people from the St. Cloud Diocese, were compiled into a book by the DCCW.

The writings address the major documents of the Second Vatican Council and provide questions for reflection on how the documents affect people today, a little more than 41 years after the council’s closing in December of 1965.

The compilation, now available to the public in a book titled, “The Documents of the Second Vatican Council at Age 40: Summaries and Reflections,” coincided with the theme of the DCCW’s annual retreat in September 2006, where the book was distributed to those in attendance.

“The Maus in the Hat?” Is this an illustration for some long-lost Dr. Seuss book? No, it was only Ann Maus, a second grade teacher at St. Mary School in Melrose, tying on one of the multiple hats she donned for Hat Day Jan. 31 at the school. (SCV photo by Sue Schulzetenberg)

Olivia Munson, Morgan Stienessen, Tori Baumgarten, Tyler Brott, Quentin Valenty, Kimberly Barthelemy, Nicole Prom, Camillo Hernandez, Noelle Young, and Julia Meyer learn about Japan from media specialist Juliana Elchert during Tourist Day Feb. 1 at St. Augustine/St. Mary’s Cathedral School in St. Cloud. Using their imaginations as a vehicle, students then “travelled” to Alaska, New York, Ukraine, Japan, California and Panama. (SCV photo by Sue Schulzetenberg)

Tie-dye-shirted teachers at St. Francis Xavier School in Sartell croon the theme, “God thing, You make my heart sing!” Forming a “wild” 1960s-era chorus line, the “groovy” teachers introduced students to “God Things” — miracles such as rainbows, pets, creation and family.
