Actor returns to Sauk Rapids as St. Maximilian Kolbe

PORTLAND, Ore. — People today don’t think of the saints as real people, according to Leonardo Defilippis. And he speaks from experience. No, he is not a saint, but he does play one on stage. In fact, he has brought more than one saint to reality and life in a series of nine one-act plays, including portrayals of Francis of Assisi, John of the Cross and Augustine (of “the Confessions of ...”).
The latest of those plays, titled, “Maximilian: Saint of Auschwitz,” will be performed at 7 p.m. Jan. 24 at Sacred Heart Church in Sauk Rapids.
Graduate student’s research assists men in spiritual transition

COLLEGEVILLE — “What’s your sign?” “What’s your line of work?” Questions like those often crop up in introductory social settings. But Jim Neppl is interested in questions that probe a bit deeper than that — questions such as “What do you value?” and “Other than money, why do you do what you do?”
Neppl has asked a series of the more profound type of questions in a research survey that he has completed toward his master’s degree in pastoral ministry at St. John’s School of Theology-Seminary in Collegeville.
Neppl wanted to know, for example, “What causes you to feel fulfilled?” and “What do you believe God wants of you as you walk the path of life?” The survey was meant for men who have ever been “between jobs” or who had recently become unemployed due to dismissal or downsizing. His goal was to provide participants with insights into their spirituality as men.
In its Oct. 20, 2006 edition, the Visitor published a story previewing Neppl’s “Research Reflectionaire” survey along with its 12 questions. Respondents could mail responses to Neppl, or e-mail them by accessing his Web site at www.spiritsatwork.net. Nineteen men responded to the reflectionaire.
Ecumenical program unites churches; volunteers provide hospitality to homeless

UPSALA — Kristine Jensen, 13, quickly made friends with a small boy who was a guest in a special transitional place during the Christmas season — within the walls of Community Covenant Church in Upsala.
While the two played with a tricycle and wagon and games of foosball, the boy’s father retreated to do some paperwork at this site of a corporal work of mercy: shelter for the homeless.
Shelter for the homeless becomes available in the small town of Upsala about four times a year through an interdenominational Christian hospitality network and the collaboration of five faith communities in the Upsala area: the three-parish cluster of St. Mary’s in Upsala, St. Edward’s in Elmdale and St. Stanislaus Kostka in Bowlus; Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Word of Life Church, and Community Covenant Church, all in Upsala; and Community Country Church situated between Upsala and Holdingford.

Elise, Gillian and Teresa Welch (from left to right) along with Sophia, Chris and Colin Welch (not pictured) create ice cream treats with their special guest (second from left) during the week of Dec. 24 at Community Covenant Church in Upsala. About four times a year, an ecumenical collection of faith communities in the Upsala area — including the three-parish cluster of St. Mary’s in Upsala, St. Edward’s in Elmdale and St. Stanislaus Kostka in Bowlus — collaborate to host the homeless through an interdenominational hospitality network. Through the network, homeless persons spend evenings at churches, at which volunteers sign up to provide sleeping accommodations and hospitality for a week at a time. During the day, guests attend New Pathways centers, such as those in Little Falls and Cambridge, during which they engage in a variety of activities. The adults are assigned a social worker and set up an action plan for becoming self-supporting. A family educator also helps. Counties served by the center in Cambridge are Isanti, Chisago, Kanabec, Pine and Mille Lacs. Another center in Little Falls serves the counties of Morrison, Todd, Wadena, Cass and Crow Wing.
