Celiacs face challenges receiving Communion, but solutions exist

by Kara Koczur

COLD SPRING — At 14 months of age, only 5 percent of the children in Lauren Davis’ age group weighed more than she. Just a month later, only 5 percent in her age group weighed less, said her mother Leigh Ann Davis.

After undergoing some tests, Lauren, now age 9, was diagnosed with celiac-sprue disease, an auto-immune intestinal disease in which gluten, found in wheat, rye, oats, and barley, damages the villi (minuscule hair-like projections) of the small intestine. Damaged villi are unable to absorb nutrients effectively, which is why the disease can lead to malnutrition, osteoporosis, intestinal cancer or other diseases, according to the Celiac Disease Foundation Web site.
“When we left the Children’s Hospital with the diagnosis, we spent about three-and-a-half hours in the grocery store that night reading labels,” said Leigh Ann, who added that sour cream, spaghetti, and chicken nuggets all contain gluten. “It was a very eye-opening experience.”

Almost immediately, Leigh Ann said, she realized Lauren’s inability to eat wheat products would affect her reception of the Eucharist, which occurred for the first time last spring at her first Communion.

“There was this piece of me that really struggled in the beginning to say, ‘If Lauren can’t receive the Eucharist, is this the place for us to be?’ ” said Leigh Ann who, along with her husband Gregg and their other daughter Kelly, belongs to St. Boniface Parish in Cold Spring. “We certainly don’t want to leave our Church. It just was really hard to process through what that meant (for Lauren).”
Besides long-term effects, celiacs also can experience immediate consequences from ingesting gluten. For example, they may experience abdominal cramping, bloating, diarrhea and vomiting.

December and January showers bring an outflowing of goodwill and gifts to mothers and babies in need

by Sue Schulzetenberg

ST. CLOUD DIOCESE — Two millennia ago, wise men from the East gave frankincense, myrrh and gold to God’s gift to the world, newborn Jesus.
Today, wise parishioners from the St. Cloud Diocese give gifts of baby clothes, receiving blankets, diapers and bottles — with the same magical spirit of generosity via “baby showers for Jesus.”

They shower such gifts not on the actual incarnated Christ-child, of course, but rather to members of the body of Christ — modern-day mothers and their babies who are in need.

The concept dovetails with Jesus’ words in Matthew 25:40, “Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did it for me.”
Several parishes participated in baby showers for Jesus in December and January, with many of the displays staying up until the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord and the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, observed this year on Jan. 7 and 8, respectively.

Many parishes place a box or bassinet in the back of the church in which parishioners put donations destined for organizations supporting parents who make the choice to give their unborn children life in the face of crisis pregnancies or other tough circumstances. Among those organizations are Birthline, Birthright and New Beginnings.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton students display gifts donated for a baby shower for Jesus at their school. Other parishes host more conventional baby showers, with refreshments, games and, of course, gifts that are then given to the pro-life organizations.
St. Francis Xavier parish in Sartell was one of those parishes.
“We thought we’d do something different — kick it up a notch, so to speak,” said Sue Schlosser, a member of the Sartell parish.

Parishioners played bingo and were entertained by a juggler. Children opened the gifts to be given to babies and their parents who are in need. The shower featured traditional baby shower foods including cupcakes, nuts and mints.
Proceeds from St. Francis Xavier’s baby shower went toward Birthline, a St. Cloud-based organization offering information on pregnancy, abortion and alternatives, friendship and emotional support, referrals to community resources and agencies, parenting classes as well as a 24-hour help line.
