What does a typical day for you include?

I start out with prayer. I usually spend an hour in the morning in prayer with the Liturgy of the Hours and then some prayer/contemplation time. That time is very important for me because one of the challenges I face, and I suppose most of us face, is looking at a day and saying, “I’m all alone in this.” That prayer time makes me realize the presence of God — the presence of Christ — in my life and that I am not alone.

“Some day I want to write a book and I think the title I want to give it is “Hands” because when people come up for
communion, and I put the body of Christ in their palms, I can see how hard our people have worked for the faith. ...”
“I have been very blessed by being able to serve as a priest going on 44 years. ...
God has been so loving and generous with me to allow me to be a priest and bishop in all of these wonderful places.”

Then I go from that hour of prayer to the celebration of Mass, which might be at home in my chapel or here in the chancery.

I usually get into the office at about 9:30 in the morning. I live out at the (St. Cloud) Children’s Home, so I make my own breakfast. I don’t have a cook except for special events.

Usually the first thing I do in the morning is to review the schedule for the day and then go through the mail. Going through the mail of a bishop can be really exciting because there are wonderful things that come in the mail. Sometimes there are very hard things that come in the mail. I like the wonderful things.

At about 10 o’clock I begin to meet with the people who want to see me that day. Mary Burrett, who is my assistant, is the one who arranges the schedule of when people are able to come in and for how long they will stay.

ST. CLOUD — The Latin term “alma mater” literally means “nourishing mother.” Marybeth Lorbiecki was nourished by her alma mater, Cathedral High School/John XXIII Middle School in St. Cloud. So, she returned there Jan. 19 to return the favor.

Lorbiecki, 1977 graduate of Cathedral High School, provided students and staff with both literary and “life-lessons” nourishment during a gathering in the school library.

“Never hand in something you just wrote,” said the much-published author, gesturing with animation toward authors-perhaps-to-be, her face expressing, in turn, happiness, surprise and enthusiasm.

Revision, persistence and unexpected turns — both in fiction and in real life — were themes that recurred during her talk.

Lorbiecki is the author of more than 20 published books, including “Sister Anne’s Hands,” “Jackie’s Bat,” “Planet Patrol: a Kids’ Action Guide to Earth Care,” “Stories from Where We Live: The Great North American Prairie Anthology” and “Children of Vietnam.”

The youthful audience listened carefully and expectantly, as if Lorbiecki were a kind of “human book” in which they could hardly wait to turn to the next page. She talked of walking through the halls they walked, about finding your life’s passion, about rejection slips, about persistence and about keeping your perspective, along with a distinction between fact and fiction in one’s life.

Becoming a published author, she said, doesn’t come without help from others. “If you get someone to give you in-depth comments, that’s the best thing you can get.”

Roe v. Wade decision observed by thousands of
pro-life marchers, including many from the St. Cloud Diocese

ST. PAUL — As they have faithfully done every year since the mid-1970s, scores of central Minnesotans from the 16 counties of the St. Cloud Diocese bused, vanned and autoed down to the state Capitol in St. Paul for the annual Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL) March for Life.

Well over 3,000 marchers attended this year’s Jan. 22 rally, according to MCCL officials, which marked the 34th anniversary of 1973’s U.S. Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion.

Many from the St. Cloud Diocese arrived early so they could attend the annual pre-march Ecumenical Prayer Service for Life at St. Paul’s Cathedral, just a short march from the Capitol building. The St. Paul-Minneapolis Archdiocese Respect Life Office sponsors the service.

Present at the march were several Minnesota state legislators and Gov. Tim Pawlenty. A handful of U.S. representatives — including Michele Bachmann, Colin Peterson and James Oberstar who represent portions of the St. Cloud Diocese, sent letters of support — which were read as the marchers gathered at the Capitol steps.
