Finance officer eager to ‘crack books’

ST. CLOUD — The letters CPA after Joseph Spaniol’s name stand for Certified Public Accountant. When he begins his new job Jan. 8, they could also stand for “Catholic Professional Administrator.” For, after 26 years in accounting at the paper mill in Sartell, Spaniol has agreed to serve the St. Cloud Diocese as its new finance officer.

Though he’ll miss the people at the paper mill, now called Verso Paper, he looks forward to working with the people of the diocese, he said.

As he prepared for his new position, Spaniol said he hopes to serve the diocese financially by following the steps of his predecessor.

Manager of Christian radio station fine-tunes operations to meet mission

SAUK RAPIDS — Deb Huschle organizes manila folders and papers atop her office desk, seemingly to the rhythm and tune of Christian music playing in the background.

Deb Huschle, general manager at Spirit 92.9, and others at the St. Cloud diocesan-owned radio station, are planning one or two community events per week for the new year. Community events promote awareness about the station, which helps achieve the station’s mission, Huschle said. (SCV photo by Sue Schulzetenberg)

But this isn’t mere background music — it’s her business. As the multi-tasking general manager of the Spirit 92.9 FM radio station in Sauk Rapids, the gamut of Huschle’s responsibilities runs from payroll to marketing to development to programming to a variety of other duties.

“I tell myself that I am putting on a different hat,” Huschle said, describing how she approaches moving from task to task.

Huschle, a member of Assumption Parish in Eden Valley, has been performing this same multitude of duties at the radio station, which is owned by the St. Cloud Diocese, since she came on board there a little more than a year ago.

However, she says, the staff at the station is so committed to the station and capable that she needs only to observe them “make things happen.”

Benedictines, Franciscans join to raise awareness of world’s limited water supply

ST. JOSEPH — In the land of 10,000 lakes and seemingly ever-flowing tap water, living on a bucket-of-water-a-day can be difficult to imagine.

But the limited water is a reality many people in the world face, and is a concern, among other troubling water issues, a group of Franciscans and Benedictines want people to understand.

Benedictine Sister Mariterese Woida of St. Benedict’s Monastery in St. Joseph has joined forces with Sister Mary Zirbes of the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls and Franciscan associate Jim Vogel to raise water awareness. They are doing so within the context of a subcommittee that formed in mid-2005 as a branch from the Franciscan and Benedictine Joint Committee.

The Franciscan and Benedictine Joint Committee is a partnership between the two orders of religious women, formed in 2005 with the goal of collaborating on peace, justice and care of creation issues.
