Delegation strengthens dioceses’ partnership

ST. CLOUD DIOCESE — A hayride through woods, trying one’s hand at a tractor, carving pumpkins and bowling with youths and strengthening a 46-year-old diocese-to-diocese partnership by getting to know your hosts better. That’s the Cliff Notes version of activities enjoyed by a six-member delegation from Maracay, Venezuela during their Oct. 18-28 stay in the St. Cloud Diocese.

“We feel the love of the people here,” said Deacon Oscar Aguilar of Maracay.
During their stay, delegates are meeting a cross-section of people in the diocese and learning how the diocese works.

So far, they’ve seen many differences between the diocese of St. Cloud and their diocese in Maracay.
Delegates and their hosts enjoy a hayride at the farm of Les Radil (sitting, right) Oct. 21 near Glenwood. On the wagon, from left, are Jerry and Tobi Stein (standing) Father Roger Ruiz, Belkis Delgado, Deacon Oscar Aguilar, Barb Kramber, Irene Zins, Father Oswaldo Roche, Marlene Estrada, Katie Klimik, Nicole Oelkers, Alicia Klimik (top), Chilly Rojas and Micki Morrissey. “It’s completely different,” said Chilly Rojas.
Belkis Delgado said she was impressed with the organization in diocesan offices the delegates visited, in that everyone knows their responsibilities, facilitating the work of the diocese.

Genealogists continue 17-year project to preserve parish records

ST. CLOUD — Around a table deep in the basement of the Chancery —flanked by full bookshelves and piled with papers and a few apples (perks of the job) — sits a committee of women diligently transcribing information.

The diocesan records committee of the St. Cloud Area Genealogists work on the parish records project. Pictured are (front row, from left) Ruth Larson and Gretchen Liesen; second row, from left, Pat Hill and Gloriann Ziebol; back row, from left, Kay Linn and Armella Schimnich. The women record parish baptisms, marriages and deaths onto 3-by-5-inch index cards which are then entered into a computer database. Their finished project will provide parishes with accessibility to hard-copy records of the information and make non-confidential information available at the Stearns History Museum. The women, all members of a group called the St. Cloud Area Genealogists, meet weekly to record information for a project that began 17 years ago. They are in the midst of a mission to provide a database of printable records of all the sacramental records —baptisms, marriages and deaths — for all parishes in the St. Cloud Diocese, including the 137 present parishes and the 16 that have closed. So far, committee members have completed their task for about 50 parishes.

Coach teaches sportsmanship, values, football skills

by Sue Schulzetenberg

ST. CLOUD — Fallen leaves, dropping temperatures and fans with mittens and hats are staples of the football season, as are shouts of team spirit and the delicate balance between realistic roughness and respectful fairness.

That balance is one that St. Augustine/St. Mary Elementary School Bulldogs football team has struck. As a result, the Bulldog players have struck it rich not only with wins but with a winningly respectful attitude toward the game.

That’s mainly because they’re on a team, parents of the players say, where the coach, Coach Ken Krahnke of Princeton, treats his young fourth- and sixth-graders like football players, teaching teamwork and respect and expecting their best effort.

This treatment must have been beneficial for the team, which ended the season Oct. 17 with 6-2 record, a record which the coach believes is the best record in the Parochial Athletic Association (PAA). The team lost its last game of the season by two points.

“As far as we know, we took the championship,” Coach Ken Krahnke said.
Because there aren’t any championship games, Krahnke considers the team that has the best record as the champion. Having the best record wasn’t an easy accomplishment for such a young team, with some players who were just learning to play the game.

Half of the team are fourth-graders, the other half, sixth-graders. Krahnke’s coaching philosophy is “to teach it realistically and add a little fun to it.”
“It’s a hard game,” Krahnke said.
Krahnke, who is now retiring after 15 years of coaching the Bulldogs, has had a majority of winning seasons. His record is three losing seasons, 12 winning seasons with four years with the best record in the PAA.
