Priests for Life director visits SJU

by Joseph Young
Visitor Interim Editor

COLLEGEVILLE — Father Frank Pavone compared oranges to oranges Oct. 16 during a conversation with about 25 students and staff members of the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph and St. John’s University in Collegeville at Sexton Commons on the SJU campus.

“We are people who have united around a very simple cause, that every single human life should be treated with dignity,” said Father Pavone, national director of the New York City-based Priests for Life (www.PriestsForLife.org). Father Pavone, who was invited on campus to speak by the CSB/SJU Students for Life Club (www.clubs.csbsju.edu/studentsforlife), said more than 80 percent of U.S. citizens believe human life begins at conception.

Parishes need be wary of endorsing or opposing candidates as election looms

by Sue Schulzetenberg

ST. CLOUD — You’ve heard the term caveat emptor (buyer beware). But have you heard the term caveat ecclesia (church beware)?

As election day draws nearer, churches — as well as other 501(c)3 (non-profit and tax-exempt) organizations — need to exercise a bit of caution, being wary not to endorse or oppose candidates who are running for political office, lest they lose their tax-exempt status.

For 501(c)3 organizations — the Catholic Church, for example —such endorsing or opposing of political candidates is not allowed. Doing so would risk their tax-exempt status, said Tom Janson, a St. Cloud-based attorney who represents the St. Cloud Diocese.

All employees of a 501(c)3 organization, when acting within their roles as employees, cannot endorse or oppose candidates.

They can, however, endorse political candidates when not acting within their roles in the organization, Janson said.

EDITORIAL: The heart of the mystery

I claim to be a Catholic, but I must admit that there are many things about the Catholic Church that I just don’t understand.
St. John Vianney, for example.

St. John Vianney is the name of a seminary in St. Paul, temporary home of four seminarians studying to be priests of the St. Cloud Diocese. That, I understand.

St. John Vianney is also the name of a popular French parish priest who died in 1859 and was canonized in 1925. In 1904, when the saint’s body was exhumed because of his impending beatification, his body was found to be undecayed (see story, page 4). His heart and body were soon separated and encased in separate glass reliquaries where they have remained ever since. The saint’s heart has recently been on tour and display in New York and Massachusetts where thousand-fold throngs are queuing up to view and pray before the incorrupt relic — his heart. That, I don’t understand.

My sentiments are summed up by Maria Gilmore who is quoted in the story as saying, “I thought everybody turned to dust, but I guess not.”

I guess I’m confused. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says “in death ... the human body decays ...” (paragraph 997), and “bodies of the dead must be treated with respect ...” (2300).

Well, St. John Vianney’s human heart and body apparently have not decayed. But neither are they being treated with respect. Digging up a body, removing the heart and putting it in a glass box is not respectful treatment —at least not where I come from.
